![]() ![]() Remember: The transmission is not under combustion stress like th engine is. That's it.įor those of us lucky enough to have "Phoney-Baloney-Lifetime-Fluid" (Cheapo but very proven DEXRON III) the service is as easy as an oil change.Īfter 60K my filter was like new but I suppose dropping the pan every 75K wouldn't hurt. Fill it until fluid leaks from the hole and then put the plug on. When you drain the tranny, the internals are all wet so what goes in simply replaces what you drained. If you do it every other year (as is recommended in high heat areas like Phoenix) you will keep the fluid in great shape.Īs for all the hokey instructions about refill and moving the transmission selector to check levels, this is completely unnecessary unless you have replaced the internals of the tranny. They did a drain and fill which gets about 2/3 of the fluid out. The filter was replaced and the pan inspected. Unfortunately, after dropping the pan, they noticed my "fly and drive" car had the european cooler fitting, one they didn't have on hand, so they couldn't do a power flush. Nothing fancy or exotic.Īt 56K, I took my car down to the BMW recommended tranny service center in PHX (AAMCO) and they were very familiar with BMW fluids. I called my local dealer and the tech folks researched my car and found that it was simply DEXRON III. I have a 2000 e39 528 with a big green sticker on the bottom of the tranny that says LIFETIME. So far I'm a happy camper.Īs someone above mentioned, some of the lifetime fluids are merely DEXRONIII Recommendation was to have another oil change after 15,000. Now at 40 miles since the oil change and it shifts like butter. The issue I had above when coming to a stop is also gone. For the first few miles after the oil change I noticed smoother shifting and a more quiet ride. I know it's far too early to tell but I would like to share my initial impressions anyway. The oil from the differential looked really clean but I had it changed anyway. Around 3 quarts went in after shifting, etc. They pulled down and cleaned the pan, magnets and installed a brand new OE filter and gasket. The oil that came out of the tranny is black already so I'm glad I had it done. Rough downshift from 2nd to 1st when coming to a stopīrought the car to an indy shop today(ET Performance in Walnut, CA) and Jim the owner who has worked on BMWs(his wife drives a 5ver) recommended BG synthetic oil. Gear oil used: BG 75-140 synthetic gear oil Transmission oil used: BG universal ATF fluid(full synthetic) I would check with the procedure of service done by the tech/dealer. Dealer did something wrong I my guess considering you had about 30K miles on the ATF and that is very low. ![]() I guess this is the last PM I will try on this car's trans. I really do not think the tech did anything wrong, anybody have an idea of what happened. How did the dealer do the change? Pan drop and fill, or did they "trans"-fuse new fluid through the cooler lines? The new fluid also supposedly "cleans" some old sludge or buildup as it circulates, hence the second change, to clean out anything that might have come loose. From the info I've been gathering before I attempt my DIY when the weather gets warmer is that shortly after first the fluid / filter change, it is a good idea to do a second and/or third change to remove all of the old, contaminated fluid. It least if the dealer screwed something up, they're responsible. I guess this is the last PM I will try on this car's trans.Man, the dealer gave you a Toyota?! Is this the dealer you bought it from? Cruel.Ĭould be the fluid level, gut reaction. I may be mistaken but pretty sure I now also hear a whine that was not there before. I detected the problem in less than a 1/2 mile and it is now at the dealer (and me with a Camry loaner). It bangs most downshifts pretty hard, although sometimes it's perfect. Only problem is now it does not shift right. Upon dropping the pan the fluid was decent, minimal collection of debris on the magnets. $350 later job was done (didn't realize I would be paying for over $50 in bolts, I knew the fluid was expensive). ![]() Was running perfectly.Īfter looking at it and realizing the exhaust pipe would be inches from my face while I'm trying to top off the fluid with the engine running, elected to go the expensive route and actually brought the car to the BMW dealer. With 30K+ miles on the fluid thought would do a preventative maintenance and drop the pan, replace filter, clean magnets and refill. Best I can tell PO had the trans serviced or replaced (no reverse) at about 68K miles. ![]()
